Elementary school at Ecole Française de Bâle
The elementary section accommodates children between the ages of 6 and 11.
5 levels:
- 1st grade (6/7 years old)
- 2nd grade (7/8 years old)
- 3rd grade (8/9 years old)
- 4th grade (9/10 years)
- 5th grade (10/11 years)
The duration of the school week for students is 26 hours. The curriculum is in accordance with the official instructions of the French Ministry of Education.
The students follow the last two cycles of the Primary School: fundamentals and consolidations.

From the 1st grade (CP)
The 1st grade (French CP) is the first year of the 2nd cycle of fundamentals learning. Children get the foundations to read, write and count. In “Questioning the world”, they discover the living world and begin to build their marks in time and space.
In German, for up to 10 hours of teaching per week.
- 3 hours per week of German lessons
- 2 hours per week of Non Linguistic lessons
- 30 min/week of counting
- 30 min/week of cultural discovery (cultural visits and/or intervention of externa/l parties for a total time of 2 hours per month)
- up to 4 hours of after-school classes in German (Mondays and Wednesdays)
In English, for up to 7 hours of teaching per week.
- 1 hour per week of English lessons (with the objective to increase to 2 hours per week from the 1st grade from the school year 2019/2020)
- Up to 5 hours per week of after-school activities in English (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays)
From the 2nd grade (CE1)
The 2nd grade (French CE1) is the second year of the second cycle running from 1st to 3rd grade. It allows to pursue the learning of the foundations that are reading, writing and counting. In “Questioning the world”, children learn marks n time and space. In science, they start to observe and handle experiments.
In German, for up to 10 hours of teaching per week.
- 3 hours per week of German lessons
- 2 hours per week of Non Linguistic lessons
- 30 min/week of counting
- 30 min/week of cultural discovery (cultural visits and/or intervention of externa/l parties for a total time of 2 hours per month)
- up to 4 hours of after-school classes in German (Mondays and Wednesdays)
In English, for up to 7 hours of teaching per week.
- 1 hour per week of English lessons (with the objective to increase to 2 hours per week from the 1st grade from the school year 2019/2020)

From the 3rd grade
The 3rd grade (French CE2) marks the end of the second cycle. It is above all year of consolidation of what was learnt in the previous years. All the 2nd grade teachers contribute to the learning of the foundations of the knowledge, skills and culture.
In German, for up to 10 hours of teaching per week.

From the 4th grade
The 4th grade (French CM1) is the first year of the consolidation cycle that runs from the 4t to the 6th grade. Students diversify their working methodologies and reinforce their knowledge. In French, the stress is put on spelling and in mathematics, children develop their reasoning through problem solving.
In German, for up to 10 hours of teaching per week.

- 2 hours per week of Non Linguistic lessons
- 30 min/week of counting
- 30 min/week of cultural discovery (cultural visits and/or intervention of externa/l parties for a total time of 2 hours per month)
- up to 4 hours of after-school classes in German (Mondays and Wednesdays)

From the 5th grade
The 5th grade (French CM2) is the second year of the consolidation cycle (cycle 3). It is the last year before middle school and students learn to gain autonomy, entrepreneur mindset and reinforce their knowledge of more complex concepts. At the end of the 5th grade, students join the best middle school of the Basel border area.
In German, for up to 10 hours of teaching per week.

Mondays from 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 4pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 3.40pm Wednesdays from 8am to 11am.

Focus on languages
From the 1st grade, 6 hours of German and 2 hours of English per week in all classes of the Elementary school. Students are grouped by level of competence
